Why Do People Quit So Easily from Network Marketing?

Maybe it’s just me, but when I was introduced to the business model inside the network marketing profession, it made total sense.  The term “pyramid scheme” never entered my mind and I didn’t ask the person that introduced me to it if it was “One Of Those Things”!

The funny thing to me is, after working in corporate America for over 25 years (and loving it), I can now see that the real pyramids are the companies that I worked for (3 Fortune 500 companies).  You go to work at 8:30 or 9 am. You work until 5 pm. Your boss, your boss’ boss, and all the way to the top of the company, are all making a lot more money than you are doing the grunt work.  Sure, it’s easy to do what someone else is telling you to do with a very structured day, but when I lost my job as Director of Technology for a non-profit here in Pittsburgh, I realized that I wasn’t suited for building someone else’s dreams anymore.  I was ready to start building my own.

I’m not criticizing corporate America…I admire people who love their jobs and are very satisfied doing the 9-5 thing building someone else’s dream, but now that I see the potential of what kind of money people are capable of making if they only believe in themselves, I am totally unemployable! LOL!

I am now committed to building my dreams – it’s not all about the money.  It’s about what the money allows me to do.  Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it helps you make choices to ensure your happiness.  It allows you to live the life that you were put here on this earth to live.  I truly believe that none of us was put here to fail.  And, the only way we can fail is if we quit!

So, why do people quit after just 30, 60, or 90 days with a network marketing company?  It’s a different mindset and I think people don’t really understand that they actually have to do work in order to get paid.  Aren’t your dreams worth working for? Why do you stay in your corporate job so long building someone else’s dreams, but you won’t stick with building your own for longer than it takes to realize that it’s not as easy as it looks.

When people realize that it’s all about building relationships with people (some whom they don’t know yet), they panic.  Why? The truth of the matter is that if you just put time into building relationships with people who want to partner with you, it’s really fun.

Getting back to the “pyramid scheme” thing, it makes me laugh when people ask that because true pyramid schemes are not legal.  I’ve actually had friends ask me that thinking that I better get out because it’s something bad…very bad!!  The truth of the matter is the definition of a pyramid scheme is when the company only recruits people with the false premise that there are real products that people would want to buy, when, in reality, there are not!  A true, legal, and only type of network marketing company that I would ever join is one with good products that people would actually want to buy.  The other sign of a pyramid scheme is when the person at the top is the only one with the opportunity of making any real money.  In good companies, everyone has the same opportunity as the person making the most money.  This is the point of my whole blog post today – read it carefully – THE ONLY REASON THAT PEOPLE DON’T MAKE THE SAME KIND OF MONEY THAT THE TOP EARNERS ARE MAKING IS BECAUSE THEY EITHER QUIT OR AREN’T TAKING THE SAME KIND OF MASSIVE ACTION THAT THE TOP EARNERS ARE TAKING.  That’s it!  The top earners are just like everyone else…the only difference is that they’ve heard “NO” many more times than you and I have.

Let me leave you with the most recent network marketing statistics and I’ll let you be the judge if whether it’s a legitimate business model.  And, one final thought…when asked what he would do if he had to start all over again, Bill Gates said that he would start in network marketing.

I hope this post has helped you understand the possibilities of the network marketing profession and that you will take it more seriously from now on!

Don’t quit…give yourself time to succeed.  And, especially don’t quit on a bad day!  There’s a reason college takes 4 years, doctors study for at least 7 years before going into practice, and corporate CEOs don’t start there!

  5. Great post Jan! I couldn’t agree more that Corporate America is the true ‘Pyramid Scheme’. I’ve been saying that for years. CEO at the top, a few high level managers under him, a few mid level managers under them, so on and so forth. After drawing this out you can instantly see the pyramid.
    Thank you for posting!
